Nicola Guidi is the commercial and creative driving force (“anima commerciale e creativa”) at Cantine Guidi, a family winery based in Tuscany. He works alongside his brother Giacomo and father Avio — part of the fourth generation of Guidi vintners.
His role focuses on commercial development, both in Italy and abroad: strategizing how to share the wines, the “soul of the family and Tuscany,” with a wider audience.
Brief History & Winery Profile
- Origins & Generations: The Guidi family has been producing wine since 1929, now working through four generations.
- Vineyards & Locations: They own about 35–50 hectares of vineyards in Tuscany, split between two main production sites:
- Tenuta Il Castagnolo in San Gimignano
- Tenuta Lo Spadaio in Barberino Val d’Elsa
- Grapes & Style: Their vineyards are planted predominantly with native Italian varieties — especially Sangiovese and Vernaccia di San Gimignano. They also grow some international grapes, such as Merlot, Chardonnay, and Cabernet Sauvignon.
- Winemaking Philosophy: Cantine Guidi emphasizes elegance, freshness, drinkability, and respect for local traditions. They blend tradition with modern techniques where it serves quality. Sustainability and ethical practices are also central to their operations.
Style & Signature
Nicola and his family aim to make wines that are:
- Expressive of Tuscany’s terroir, particularly the rolling hills between Siena and Florence, San Gimignano, Chianti Classico, etc.
- Balanced: not overly oaky or heavily manipulated, but wines where varietal character (Sangiovese, Vernaccia) comes through.
- Elegant and accessible: wines that have prestige but are still enjoyable, drinkable — “bevibilità” is a word used in descriptions.
Cantine Guidi Chianti DOCG
A classic, fruit-forward Chianti made predominantly from Sangiovese, with small additions of Canaiolo and Colorino. Bright ruby red in color with aromas of red cherry, violet, and a hint of spice. The palate is lively and balanced, showcasing juicy red fruit and soft tannins. A quintessential Tuscan table wine that pairs beautifully with pasta, pizza, or roasted meats.
Cantine Guidi Chianti Classico DOCG
Sourced from the family’s vineyards in the heart of the Chianti Classico zone, this wine reflects tradition and elegance. Deep ruby in color with aromas of ripe cherry, blackcurrant, and tobacco. On the palate, it shows refined tannins, fresh acidity, and classic notes of herbs, spice, and subtle oak. A fine example of Chianti Classico’s harmony between fruit and structure.
Cantine Guidi Chianti Classico Riserva DOCG
Aged longer to develop complexity and depth, the Riserva offers intense aromas of dark cherries, leather, and cedar. Full-bodied yet graceful, with layers of black fruit, dried herbs, and vanilla from barrel aging. The finish is long and persistent, highlighting the maturity and finesse that define a great Riserva. Ideal for hearty dishes and aged cheeses.
Cantine Guidi Selezione Vernaccia di San Gimignano DOCG
From the Tenuta Il Castagnolo estate, this Vernaccia showcases Tuscany’s iconic white grape. Pale straw yellow with green highlights, it opens with aromas of citrus blossom, pear, and almond. Crisp and mineral-driven on the palate, with refreshing acidity and subtle notes of white peach and herbs. A vibrant, food-friendly white that shines with seafood and light pasta.
Cantine Guidi Toscana “Selezione Privata Luca” IGT
Named after a family member, this special cuvée reflects modern Tuscan craftsmanship. A blend of Sangiovese, Merlot, and Cabernet Sauvignon, it combines ripe dark fruit and spice with polished tannins and a velvety mouthfeel. Rich yet balanced, with notes of blackberry, plum, and cocoa. Elegant enough for fine dining, yet approachable in youth.
Cantine Guidi Toscana “Avus Venter” IGT
A bold, limited-production red expressing the depth of Tuscan terroir. Intense aromas of black cherry, blueberry, and dark chocolate lead into a powerful, structured palate framed by firm tannins and refined oak. Long, persistent finish with hints of espresso and spice. A collector-worthy Super Tuscan with cellaring potential.
